I read this book some time ago, over the Christmas break, and I've found myself returning to its ideas and principles in my mind over the months since as the hectic pace of work has picked up for the year.
Think Less Be More is a book written by one of my clients, Dr Christine Maingard. It's about handling stress through the practice of what she calls 'mindfulness'.
The first few chapters of the book reveal what we all already know: that the world is a stressful place, and with new technology and advanced communication it has never been more frantic than at the present time.
Dr Maingard then delivers us techniques to deal with this stress.
Essentially, she teaches us how to be mindful. Mindfulness is a state of being self-aware, of stepping back internally and observing ourselves. Of putting things in perspective. Mindfulness helps free us from negative thinking and stress.
The techniques Dr Maingard shares include meditation, breathing patterns and thought exercises. But despite how 'hippy' that sounds written here, they are presented with clarity and thought to enable even the most down-to-earth everyman to benefit.
Dr Maingard is a business consultant and facilitator so she draws on her experience with workplace stress and everyday people to give advice that is practical and welcome.
