Naomi Simson is one of Australia's lauded young business entrepreneurs and I Want What She's Having is her book describing the building of her successful corporate gift business, RedBallon.
In my mind there's two basic types of business books: instructional and inspirational. This offering falls mainly into the second category.
I Want What She's Having is an entertaining look into the struggles and joys of business as RedBalloon (formally named "RedBalloon Days") goes from a small startup to the thriving trans-Tasman business it currently is.
While the focus is more on the story than on instruction, Simson talks about what she's learnt along the way and breaks her knowledge down into principles and rules that any business owner can benefit from.
Small business owners will be able to relate to a lot of Simson's experiences even if her industry is quite different. Her energy and exuberance are infectious, this is obviously woman who loves her job and is passionate about making it work.
I found her chapter on the importance of discovering your purpose especially timely. Not only do you need to find out why your business itself exists but how you and your employees fit into that purpose. A person working with a purpose they can fulfill is happier and more effective.
Other insights range from practical marketing tips to leadership of creative individuals.
In short, this book is worth reading for the nuggets of experience that are shared and the passion displayed.
